Authentic Jamaican Sorrel Drink

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of fresh sorrel
  • 2–4 oz grated ginger
  • 2 quarts of water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 8–12 pimento grains
  • Optional: Jamaican rum
  • Optional: A splash of wine

Directions

  1. Wash the sorrel thoroughly, lifting it gently from the water.
  2. Place the cleaned sorrel in a stainless steel container.
  3. Peel, wash, and grate the ginger before adding it to the sorrel.
  4. Add the pimento grains.
  5. Boil water and pour it over the mixture.
  6. Allow the mixture to steep for 4–6 hours.
  7. Strain the liquid carefully to remove solids.
  8. Sweeten to taste and add rum if desired. Optionally stir in wine.
  9. Serve chilled over ice.

Tips and Tricks

For stronger flavor, let the sorrel steep overnight before straining.

Adjust sweetness by adding more sugar or honey if preferred.
