Jamaican Red Peas Soup

Red Peas Soup is a traditional Jamaican favorite. Made with red kidney beans, beef, yam, breadfruit, dumplings, and seasoned with thyme and Scotch bonnet, it’s a filling and flavorful one-pot meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 quart water
  • 3 cups red kidney beans, soaked overnight
  • 1 lb stewing beef
  • 1/2 lb yam, cubed
  • 1 medium potato, cubed
  • 1 medium carrot, chopped
  • 1 medium sweet potato, chopped
  • Spinners (dumplings)
  • 3 stalks escallion, chopped
  • 6 slices breadfruit
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme
  • 1 whole Scotch bonnet pepper
  • 1 (12 oz) package chicken or beef soup mix

 

Directions

  1. Boil water, then add beef and kidney beans. Simmer until tender.
  2. Add yam, potato, carrot, sweet potato, and spinners. Cook 20–30 minutes.
  3. Add escallion, breadfruit, thyme, Scotch bonnet, and soup mix. Stir well.
  4. Simmer 15 more minutes. Remove thyme and Scotch bonnet before serving.

Tips and Serving

Serve hot as a complete meal with crackers or bread. For extra richness, add pig’s tail or salted beef to the pot along with the red peas.
