Traditional remedies are part of everyday life in Jamaica. Below are a few well known plants and what people commonly use them for. This is general information, not medical advice.

Common plants and uses

Aloe Vera. Cooling gel for minor burns and skin irritation. Often applied to small cuts and sun exposure.

Ginger. Popular for nausea support and digestion. Used in teas for upset stomach and to warm up on cool days.

Bizzy (Cola) Nut. Traditionally used in small amounts for alertness. Also seen ground as “bizzy powder.”

Leaf of Life. Used in folk remedies for minor coughs and small wounds. Leaves are sometimes crushed and applied to the skin.
