Traditional Jamaican Chicken Foot Soup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken feet
  • 2 lbs yam (optional)
  • 1 lb pumpkin
  • 1/2 green breadfruit (optional)
  • 1 lb dasheen (optional)
  • 1 small cho cho, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 medium carrots, chopped
  • 1 stalk scallion, chopped
  • 2 sprigs thyme
  • 1 hot pepper (optional)

Directions

  1. Clean chicken feet thoroughly and place in a large pot filled with water. Bring to a boil.
  2. Add cho cho, pumpkin, and carrots. Boil for 30 minutes.
  3. Add yam, breadfruit, dasheen, scallion, thyme, and hot pepper. Add salt to taste.
  4. Let simmer for an additional 30–40 minutes until all ingredients are soft and flavors are blended.
  5. Add dumplings if desired during the final 20 minutes of cooking.

Tips and Tricks

Soak the chicken feet in vinegar and water for 10 minutes before boiling to improve flavor and cleanliness.

Remove the pepper before serving if you want just the flavor without the heat.

This soup thickens more as it cools, making it great for reheating later.
